GUAN (觀)

Gaze-responsive installation

2025–2026

GUAN (观) is a gaze-responsive installation that invites participants to slow down and notice time passing. In contrast to the rapid, fragmented flow of information on social media, the work asks people to remain with a single, gradual event: a block of virtual ice melting. Eye tracking detects where each participant looks, causing the ice to dissolve precisely at the point of attention. A brief glance leaves a small trace, while sustained observation carves a deeper change. The ice therefore has no predetermined final form; it is shaped dynamically by the collective patterns of its viewers’ attention. As the virtual ice disappears, real water drips into a tank beneath the screen, giving accumulated time a physical presence. GUAN transforms looking from a passive act into a material force. It creates a quiet space where boredom, patience, and curiosity allow participants to experience duration directly and become present with gradual change.
